Peter Cook lived an active, fulfilling life. Born and bred in Brisbane, he enjoyed being part of a happy family – playing Rugby League, going to the beach and having fun on camping holidays. As an adult, he had a successful career, married and raised two boys. Life was rosy.
But in 2015 at the age of 64, life as he knew it took a dramatic turn for Peter when he fell from a ladder and damaged his spinal cord, resulting in quadriplegia. Just how does someone overcome such an extreme level of adversity?
In his book, My Life, My Choice, Peter takes readers on his recovery journey from those first dark days in hospital, through the highs and lows of rehab in a spinal unit, to finally going back home to a new reality. Apart from the excellent healthcare he received, Peter says his motivation for living his best life is due to a combination of factors – having a supportive network of people around him, including health professionals, family and friends; nurturing his mental health; and an innate ability to communicate with others and to always find the positives in life.
A positive mindset is something this survivor has in spades.
